Salamanca, NY

A portion of the Appalachian Mountains, Allegany State Park tops the list of favorite areas in Western New York for most hikers. It is the largest State park in New York State (not to be confused with Forest Preserves like the Adirondacks or Catskills). With over 70 miles of hiking trails, you can feel like you’ve escaped into another place and time.
Allegany is nice also for a scenic drive, as there are many overlooks at which to stop and enjoy thevista. As you drive through the hills, you can usually spot a plethora of wild animals along the roadside, including turkeys, deer, and hedgehogs.

SCENIC OVERLOOKS IN AUTUMN
These photos of several of the scenic overlooks were taken on 10/25/97, just as the leaves were beginning to change colors. The winter photo was taken in January 2000.
